Emma Woodhouse, the lovely daughter of one of the wealther families in town, loves to play matchmaker. One recent success has gone to her head, however, and the next time she tries to fix someone up it goes terribly wrong... for the man she had tried to set up is in love with her!

How complete Jane Austen makes her characters. She gives them so much personality that I feel that I've known the person for years by the middle of the book.

It's a classic romance, with clever writing and great characters.

I found it odd that I didn't really like Emma very much at the beginning. In my experience with Austen heroines, they are usually likable young women. Emma, however, took some getting used to but I believe that was Austen's point.
