Summary of this Book...
The lives of two fraternal twins and the event that shaped their lives in India. So much more is offered in this book though. It's a story of growth, of loss, of family, of society, of big things, and of little things. Pinpointing it's purpose is nearly impossible
I especially liked...
Just about everything. I would have to say that this is probably one of the greatest books I've ever read. Above all else though, Roy's style of writing is my favorite aspect of this novel. Her ability to characterize the most inaminate objects, describe the world in ways that it should never be described and do it well, and show us everything we need to see it amazing. By far, this story ranks as one of the best done narratives I've ever read.
I didn't like...
nothing
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
reread it immediately. So much happens, through so many facets and so many foreshadowed events that it's almost impossible to not want to reread this book. It's that good. I felt a little submerged in the world, seeing what was going on in Roy's world the first time through, and only in a second read could I really read and see what so many things meant and how well they were displayed.
This Book made me feel...
Just about everything. At times I was disgusted, at others I was lost, and still others actually happy. As a whole though, this story is depressing. Even in happier moments, the overwhelming sense of dread as you approach THE event that shapes this novel really drowns out everything else.
The author of this Book...
has only written one book to my knowledge and will never write another. Her work is astounding though, and as an author she reaches heights rarely seen. A true genius in the craft
I recommend this Book because...
I originally read this for a Comp. Lit class at school. It was the only book during the quarter that I actually read faster than I was supposed to. Then I read it again. I took another Comp Lit class the next quarter and we read it again. That's how good it is. If you enjoy reading, you will like this book.
Further Comments...
As a note there are a few scenes in this book that are disturbing, taboo, and downright graphic. They are not meant for children, and shouldn't be read by them as such, but the way in which they are written leaves me to think that they wouldn't disturb a reader in a way that would discourage reading this book. They are too well written for that. A certain sex scene comes to mind that is absolutely amazing. Despite its detalied, graphic descriptions, it's so beautifully written that it can't be called pornographic. It's a beautifully erotic weaving of words.
