Summary of this Book...
treachery and deception both in personal relations and political. It deals with fundamental issues. What do we owe to our familes? At what point do we compromise our vision and our self? When we use deception to achieve moral ends, how does this compromise affect us? What unforeseen results are produced?
I especially liked...
the unfolding of the plot as treachery and deceit lead to unexpected turns of events. I also liked the fact that the ending is unpredictable and unsatisfying, like life.
I didn't like...
the details of the disease. At first, the realistic and basic details of caring for someone with a disease stopped me from reading the book. But, then I returned to it and found it very rewarding.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
ask Rohinton Mistry, what lesson he was trying to convey in this book? He resisted the temptation to end his story with everyone living happily ever after. In this story even though things turn out for the better, people are not necessarily happier.
This Book made me feel...
very thoughtful. I feel that I need to read it again to understand the powerful messages conveyed at the end.
The author of this Book...
is a brilliant author who is always full of surprises. In his earlier book , A Fine Balance, some of the characters round happiness was in the middle of incredibly bad fortune, poverty and corruption. Here, things improve but improvement does not equate with happiness. This author has some very complex messages to give about how life really is.
I recommend this Book because...
it is a very thoughtful study about how human beings take situations and by their actions render them worse in trying to make them better.
I don't recommend this Book because...
it could be depressing for someone looking after a person with a serious physical illness
Further Comments...
This book requires a careful read. It is very subtle in the way that the plot builds up. The unexpected twists and turns create a dynamism that escalates towards the end of the novel to a very haunting conclusion
