Summary of this Book...
a young woman's journey through trauma, and, eventually, recovery. At the tender age of eighteen, college freshman Alice gets brutally beaten and raped by a stranger. This book details the actual incident, the legal proceedings, and how her life turns out as a rape victim.
I especially liked...
the fact that Sebold was so honest in sharing her life with her readers. That was probably the best part of the book. It (obviously) made the book seem more real. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, happened in this book that seemed out of place. The dialogue is realistic, the characters were well-developed, and and setting, right down to the street names, were real--I know because I live in the same area.
I didn't like...
when the book ended.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
write more, read her next book, The Lovely Bones. I wanted to learn more about rape and how I can help rape victims. I wanted to be a stronger feminist and a stronger woman.
This Book made me feel...
dirty. Definitely dirty, in the begginning, because when Sebold details her rape, she gives such minute details that you really feel as if you are there. It was quite painful, really. I feel like i know the author; I do, in a sense, because I have gotten a small peak into her life now.
The author of this Book...
is a wonderful writer. It is very brave of her to put all of her experiences in print like this. By doing this, she is also showing that it is possible to recover from something like this, that its a hottible thing to be put into this terrible situation, but that it is possible to rebuild your life. This is a book that both victims of violent or sexual crimes could relate to as well as their families, friends, and anyone else who might just "not get it."
I recommend this Book because...
it is important for us as a society to understand this tragedy better every day.
