Summary of this Book...
a woman whose husband dies. As a pilot's wife, Kathryn has always known she must be prepared for that "late-night knock on the door." But when that knock comes, she is plunged into a whole new world; a world of not only tragedy, grief, and loss, but of confusion, deception, and manipulation. She now must question the most basic truths of her marriage--or live the rest of her life in a lie.

Without giving too much of the plot away, I will describe a bit more:

After the plane her husband was piloting crashes, Kathryn is confronted with bits and pieces of information that just don't fit; numbers and names on scraps of paper, the cock pit tape revealing some peculiar things that happened in her husband's last moments alive, and the airline's refusal to release the information she needs to find closure.

After squirming in her seat like a woman in a room of spiders with a bag on her head, Kathryn heads abroad to seek out answers to her questions...but does she find the answers that she wants? You'll have to read the book, dude!
I especially liked...
the beginning of the book. The way Shreve describes Kathryn's feelings made me feel them too. I saw what she saw, put my hand to my heart when she did, was exhausted when she was. The detail Shreve added in when describing scenes and the characters' actions was incredible.

I also liked the plot of this story. It kept me turning the pages....I could hardly put the book down.
I didn't like...
the way the book seems to drop off or loosen up towards the last third of the book. (Up until the middle is great, up until the last third is cool, but that last third just seems like it lost some of its steam or something.)
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
be a single woman forever. This book just reinforces my slightly anti-men, absolutely feminist stance.
This Book made me feel...
a bit scared. Even though I know that this story isn't true, it is awfully scary to think that it is possible not to know someone you are in a long-term relationship with, let alone someone you are married to! The things that came out in the main character's "detective work" were startling to say the least.
The author of this Book...
has alot of other books out. I don't know much about her.
I recommend this Book because...
its pretty cool. I couldn't stop turning the pages, but towards the end the plot thinned out a bit, and became somewhat far-fetched. But I would read it again; I finished it a week ago, and parts of it are still sticking with me, which is a good sign.
Further Comments...
This is one of the books from Oprah's Book Club. That's why I originally picked it.

Give it a try.
