The Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I and her life. Told as a memory on the night before the execution of Lord Essex, Elizabeth regales the reader with her life, her loves, her terrors, and her reign as the best loved of the Tudor Monarchs. While not 100% historically accurate, the story is beguiling and the characters are rich and multi-layered.

The characterizations, because they were multi-dimensional, especially Elizabeth. The author paints a very realistic portrait of every day life in Elizabethan England, whether one is gentry or peasant. I felt as if I were there.

Read another by the same author, she's that good.

does an excellent job in making the reader feel the place, and know the characters. Everything is real and the reader is part of it. She also does an excellent job in letting you hear the inner thoughts of the character of Elizabeth, why she did what she did. A fascinating read.

Anyone who enjoys the Tudor period and/or Elizabethan England will love this story. Anyone who enjoys historical fiction will love this story. Anyone who likes to read...it appeals to everyone.
