Summary of this DVD...
The infamous pirate Captain Jack Sparrow sets off on a mission with a blacksmith's apprentice, Will Turner, to save Will's one true love, Elizabeth Swann, the governor's daughter, from a band of evil pirates, led by Captain Barbossa. Unbeknownst to our heroes (well, kinda) Barbossa and his crew are under an ancient Aztec curse. Due to a bit of lying and uh, stealing on Elizabeth's part, these pirates believe that she is the one who will lift this curse that has plagued them for years. How? By spilling her blood over some numbered Aztec Gold. Soon everyone is involved in the search for Elizabeth (after all she is the governor's daughter): Her father, the "Down-With-Pirates" Commodore Norrington, and among other soldiers, the humourous pair of navy guards, Murtogg & Mullroy. A swashbuckling adventure the whole family can enjoy say some, 2 1/2 hours of pure fun says I.
This type of DVD is good for...
Ummm...well to hear my some of my friends *cough* and I *cough* tell it, this DVD is perfect for watching over and over again. It also has a WONDERFUL extras section including 19 deleted scenes, a blooper reel, commentaries by the director and *ahem* certain actors in the movie, and numerous documentaries/on the set features.
I especially liked...
well, having seen the movie a few times in the cinema *cough* six *cough*, I really looked forward to the extras. And I certainly wasn't dissapointed! I still haven't watched them all (there are 19 scenes after all) and I haven't had the time to even touch anything else besides the blooper reel, and of course the movie itself.
I didn't like...
the length of the movie which clocks out at about 143 minutes total. I mean we're talking just 20 more minutes and we're in Lord of the Rings stage length (although who wants that to be shorter either?). It could have been like 15 minutes shorter and I'd have probably have been happier. Note the stress on "could" because I really can't think of the 15 minutes of the film I'd personally like to shave off. It all works so well together, I'd hate to see anything leave to make up for my own attention span problems. *Smile* So I now watch the movie by this motto: fifteen minutes, fifteen schminutes.*grins*
When I finished viewing this DVD I wanted to...
umm....are you going to hit me if I say "Watch it again?"
The cast of this DVD...
did a great job. Make that stupendous. Make that marvelous! I really though I was watching something that had taken place in British controlled Port Royale. Johnny Depp, fabulous actor in general, really came through in this performance. I mean, he WAS Captain Jack Sparrow. Orlando Bloom, notable for Legolas in Lord of the Rings, was also quite good as Will Turner, playing his part to a tee. Keira Knigthley as Miss Swann did a wonderful job, too. And of course there's Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa, who really was totally the part as well. In truth, every single actor gave something to this movie. Jack Davenport, Jonathan Pryce, Mackenzie Crook, Lee Arenburg, etc. ALL of them did wonderfully.
I recommend this DVD because...
I personally enjoyed it, and even though I know some people who didn't particularly mark this on their "To Buy" list and didn't really like it either, all could agree that they were glad they'd seen it once. Take my father who is normally a Western kinda guy and doesn't particularly have a taste for Johnny Depp, came out of the theatre in smiles saying "That was good".
Further Comments...
One more thing I feel the need to mention. The reason this only gets 4 stars for setting instead of five: The land in Pory Royale never gets higher than 10 feet above sea level. In the movie, it is literally built on 100 feet high basaltic cliffs. Hello? *Confused*
