Summary of this Book...
A Child Called "It" is a horrific true story of a boy growing up under the rule of an abusive mother who is forced to sleep on an army cot in the basement, eat his baby brother's feces, swallow ammonia, and starved for days at a time.
This type of Book is good for...
This book will open the eyes of other adults and make them aware of all of the signs of child abuse, even in the less severe forms.
I especially liked...
I liked that the author took all of the tragedy in his life and used it to do positive, and that he doesn't use his story as a means of excuse, and instead retells it as a means of educating.
I didn't like...
I didn't like the testimonials at the end. It felt like the author was trying to justify telling his story, rather than telling it because he wanted to help others.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
I wanted to seek out his mother and shake her and ask her what is wrong with her to treat someone like this. I was angry at all parents who could abuse their children and then pretend to the world that they are the best mother or father.
This Book made me feel...
I felt angry, shocked, sickened, and appaled that one human being could do the things David's mother did to him.
The author of this Book...
The author of this book is a survivor and is courageous to tell his story for everyone to read. Many victims of abuse feel ashamed or scared to tell their story, and I commend him for being able to do this.
I recommend this Book because...
This book is an eye opener for anyone who has not experienced abuse or known someone who experienced abuse. For those that have experienced abuse, it gives you the courage to want to tell your own story.
I don't recommend this Book because...
I don't recommend this book for those who are still trying to deal with their abuse and may be triggered by some of the graphic content in the book.
Further Comments...
I was abused as a child by multiple men in my life, and I found the things that happened to David to be shocking. It was very difficult for me to get through this book, at times, but I found it worthwhile to read because it was comforting to know that despite David's situation as a child, he grew up to be a successful adult. It made me know that it is possible for me.
