I decided to read this after the film came out, and I knew about it from years ago when it was one of the set texts on an English exam. I studied the frightening 'The Handmaid's Tale' by Margaret Atwood. I won't give you a summary as it might ruin the unfolding writing.

The way it draws you in with an unapologetically complex and intelligent character driven to despair.
I thought the ending was a little bit rushed, but the appendices helped to clarify and ended it pefectly.

Clarissa, I must admit, was a little bit one-dimensional but I think that has more to with the narrator Joe Rose than anything else. She did also seem quite needlessly against Joe towards the end.

Read some other Ian McEwan books.

A little bit worried but gripped.

It is an exceptionally written book with a very different protagonist.

The two reviewers on Amazon which rated this book zero out of five I can't fathom. One has obviously read an incident as next day when really it was a flashback to a past, more joyful, birthday. Another suggested this had a cruel view of animals in someway. I've been racking my brains to try and figure out what could've prompted this view and I have absolutely no idea. As far I can remember there's no animals in it!!!
