This is a story about a poor girl that no one takes care of, who has no name and no past. She is rescued into a barely better life and works hard and, in the end, she is empowered, but not completely.

I think it's a terrific young adult novel. Good for kids, especially girls, around twelve or thirteen years old.

I especially like how she names herself. That was a very powerful moment in the book.

How little the main charecter thinks of herself, even in the end. She nevers seems to come to her full realization of herself. I don't know, the way I see it, if I had been learning a job for as many years as it seems like she was, I would hope that I would be good at it, and she never quite seemed to get there.

It's good book for young people, it's historical and tells about difficulties in life.

The end is a bit of a let down.

My thirteen year old daughter reccomended that I read this book. She really enjoyed it.
It's a Newberry Trophy winner too.
