This book is a collection of 5 short stories, taking place at different times and points of history in Pern's history. The first story deals with the very first survey of Pern, and the team that evaluated the planet. The second story deals with the evacuation of Landing. The third story is about the founding of Ruatha Hold, and the fourth is about the founding of the second weyr. The fifth story was quite a surpise to me, and will compliment your knowledge of Pern nicely if you've read "All the Weyrs of Pern".

The stories! Anne McCaffrey has a special touch with short stories that make them highly enjoyable to read.

Read the next in the series! (Chronologically, that would be "Dragonseye").

Enlightened as to much of the history of Pern. Very informative!

It's a great read (5 separate great reads, actually). To fully appreciate the book, though, I think you may've needed to read some of the first ones (that is, the first ones published--but the later ones, chronologically), so you can make the connection of how society developed. Though it can be read on its own, as well.
