In the main character's world sorcery is banned and anyone caught practising it is burned alive. This is what happened to Seri's husband ten years previously. her son was killed at brith for being the child of a healer/sorcerer. She has since moved away from her old life and has tried to move on. one day she runs across a man hunted by the same people who took her family from her. She helps him recover his identity, though as the story progresses, it appears that he may be a sorcerer as well as a warrior, and may prove crucial for dealing with a menace that the Four Realms have brought on themselves by their war against magic.
