Summary of this Book...
Kaku gives the history of the superstring theory and gives inplications. He stresses that it's still an unproven theory, but that right now it's the best candidate for being the right one for the "Theory of Everything".
This type of Book is good for...
Anyone who likes to read about real science, but has no physics or math background.
I especially liked... | ||
The simplicity of Kaku's style. It's written so anyone can understand if they are willing to think.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Look for some more recent books on superstrings. Work on a science fiction idea I had.
This Book made me feel...
Stimulated. Smart, because I could understand it.
The author of this Book...
Is a real scientist who doesn't look down on the non-scientist reader... gives us credit for some intelligence.
I recommend this Book because...
Kaku is a balanced scientist. He's open to the fact that there are people who will bring different philosophical and religious beliefs to this subject. He doesn't cater to them, but he doesn't bash them, either.
I don't recommend this Book because...
If you don't want to think or are unwilling even to look at a non-creationist view of the world, this book will be more work and frustration than it's worth. It's not easy reading, just easier than physics textbooks or journals.
Further Comments... | ||
This book is an excellent choice for the non-scientist to have some idea what is happening in physics. It's also a great source for the writer, for ideas for hard sf stories or even those more loosely based on science. Kaku humanizes science. You get to see characters, not merely names of great scientists. He relates the subject to real life and literature with references to some of the societal results of public awareness of some of these theories; and to movies, television and books. You can't go into this book with the same easy reading thought processes as you would a Star Trek novel. You'll get a clear idea of the feasabilty of the Star Trek Universe, though.
