SYNPOSIS:

This is an autobiographical look at Johnny Cash’s life written by the musician himself.

Cash names his chapters after the residences he owns and structures his stories around the important events in his life that happens there. While it is something different, it doesn’t allow for a linear telling of his life.

Cash touches upon his time in the Air Force, his first marriage, his addiction to prescription painkillers, his musical influences, and the people in his life who are important to him.

PLOT AND PACING

Because of how Cash has arranged his chapters, the storytelling is out of any liner-type pattern. Instead, Cash tells vignettes, or episodes, in his life. It proves to be a bit disconcerting to the reader. While the stories are interesting, the pacing is uneven and choppy.

After watching “Walk The Line,” I wanted to read Cash’s book which inspired the movie. For those readers who want to discover Cash and get a flavor for him as a performer, this book will do that. Cash captures his interesting life well in his vignettes and the end is satisfactory, leaving the reader that Cash as found a sense of peace towards the end of his life. However, if you are looking for a blow by blow account of the major events of his life, with all the juicy details, you will be disappointed. Cash doesn’t tell us about his first meeting with June, or how their romance blossomed during their time together on the road. For me, that piqued my interest the most.

The writing is sound, light, and very engaging. You get the feeling that Cash is talking to you personally, it’s only the structure of how the material is presented that weighs his story down.
