Summary of this CDs & Vinyl...
I recently browsed a Sam Goody store in the hopes of finding a particular CD and was let down. I spotted this instead, and, seeing as I had enjoyed my other impulse Cirque Du Soleil buy (their best-of album), I snatched it up. I was anxious that I would end up disappointed, since one CD is much different from another. This CD was very weird the first time I listened to it. But I knew from the very first song that I liked it already. Now I love it even more than their best-of album! --- This is the "soundtrack," so to speak, apparently of the Cirque Du Soleil performance of "Ka." I have never seen any of their performances, thus can't even tell you WHAT this CD is about. I'm guessing it has something to do with star-crossed lovers seeking the truth or something...but I could be way off...that's based only on the few lyrics that are in English, and the odd jacket art. Needless to say, even if you have no clue what it's about, it doesn't matter. The music is just as gorgeous...and you can make up the story on your own.
This type of CDs & Vinyl is good for...
Getting really inspired. See my review of their other album; again, this is not music to chill out to, unless you like soaring strings and pounding drums to drift off to...
I especially liked...
The instrumental tracks "Shadowplay," "Flight," and "Love Dance," though "Pursuit" really grew on me. "O Makunde," "Koudamare," and the bonus English track "We've Been Waiting So Long" are also exceptionally great. A real orchestra is used here, and the instrumental tracks alone are EXACTLY what should be featured in a lot MORE soundtracks nowadays!
I didn't like...
I hate nothing here, though a few of the tracks, including the English-language version of the instrumental "Deep," "Reach For Me Now," are a bit on the bland side; but it's the remixed-sounding "Threat" which is the weirdest track of all, and kind of jarring in how it repeatedly cuts off the string sections. Fortunately, I think the strings in this song are the same as featured in "Love Dance"--so listen to that track to hear them in their entirety.
When I finished n/a this CDs & Vinyl I wanted to...
FIND MORE JUST LIKE IT!! Too bad that's easier said than done...
This CDs & Vinyl made me feel...
Overjoyed that I had actually bought such a great CD! I also have the habit of listening to soundtrack score music while envisioning scenes from my own stories...and needless to say, this CD helped immensely with that particular habit.
The n/a of this CDs & Vinyl...
Is various performers working under the Cirque Du Soleil label. The composer is Rene Dupere, the person behind the gorgeous "Alegria" on Cirque's best-of album...which was one of the reasons why I hoped I would enjoy this CD, too!
I recommend this CDs & Vinyl because...
It is utterly gorgeous, and has to be heard to be believed.
I don't recommend this CDs & Vinyl because...
Well, I wouldn't recommend it if you just don't like great music.
Further Comments...
As with their best-of album, Cirque Du Soleil's music could easily fit in the New Age, world, or classical categories, yet not fit perfectly into any of those. Lest you get the wrong impression, it is NOT big-top circus music. The instrumental tracks sound like music that would come out of a movie scored perhaps by Hans Zimmer on a good day, and other tracks have a decidedly ethnic feel ("O Makunde" and "Forest" sound vaguely African, while "Koudamare" sounds strangely Eastern European to me). Some songs feature solo female singing, others feature the entire chorus of male and female singers; there's also a boy soprano, I believe. Many of the lyrics sound to be "made up," i. e., not in any real language, though I can't say that for certain. A good point is that tunes found in the vocal tracks can be heard repeated in the instrumental tracks and vice-versa, which brings the entire album together as a cohesive whole. I would have chosen "We've Been Waiting So Long" as the ending track myself, though. (It and "Reach For Me Now" are "bonus tracks" apparently not featured in the show.)
