Apparently, this book has been put out there as Vampire Fiction. If you're a fan of such things, don't read this. It'll only make you feel cheated. Me, I didn't know what it was supposed to be about so when a theory about vampires popped up, I had no idea what the heck was going on. To me, it was just about a girl that got transplanted to a new school and then had to deal with a weird relationship between her father and the school nurse. She was also going through changes of her own and her views on the movie-ish world around her took me in. In the end, I don't think it's about vampires at all, but Mendelsohn really leaves that up to you to decide, I think.

Studying imagery and voice. The first person POV and the format in which it's presented is beautiful. The main character's vision is warped and clear and fantastic.

The personality behind the descriptions. I never felt like Mendelsohn was describing anything--I always felt as if the main character, Beckett, was experiencing it with me behind her eyes. But she was aware of my presence there, an that unnerved me. In a good way.

The vampire side of the plot. It was a little too "ew" for me, but I can't say it didn't fit for the novel's purposes.

Colorful and a little bit fake. That's a good thing. It shows the book bled onto me.
