Garrett's having a bad day. And when his actions within his street gang mark him a murderer, his sentence has him hurtling toward Mars as a colonist. It's better than prison, right? It is a one-way ticket and the death rate is high because of the risky work there is in the mines and because of the cutthroat ways of the Marsmen. But Garrett gets lucky and finds himself up in the middle of a group that's working toward independence from Earth.

Oh, it's a pocket book, people. It's good for skimming through and getting a general gist to take your mind off the white wall of the dentist's office. Don't expect excellent literature.

The descriptions of the contraptions the colonists of Mars live and travel in.

How heavily geared this book was toward a male audience. I can't blame Pournelle too much, though, because it's sci-fi written in the 1970s, when there wasn't much of a female audience to speak of for the genre.
