Sunny Batten’s mother, Margaret, dies accidentally in her own home from carbon monoxide poisoning. Not only that, she dies with a man that everyone says she planned to marry. But neither Sunny nor the man’s son, Fletcher Finn, knew about the engagement. When Sunny returns to the small town of King George, New Hampshire, she finds out a lot more about her mother and about herself.

an enjoyable read. This dark comedy is both funny and hopeful.

Elinor Lipman has written a book of short stories and several novels, including Ladies Man and Then She Found Me. She has taught college writing and lives in Massachusetts.

I found it uplifting.

When I catch myself getting too serious, I need to read a book like this to lighten my mood. I had a feeling after reading Then She Found Me that Elinor Lipman’s Dearly Departed might do the trick, and I was right.
