The author takes a look at what it was like to be a royal mistress to the king. What it took to become the mistress, hold onto that title, what it was like to give birth to a royal bastard, and what the mistress could expect when the king died. The author gives insight into Louis 14th, Louis 15th, Charles II, and even Prince Charles!

I loved the author's writing style. It was very engaging and easy to read. In fact, I was stagnated on reading, "LOVE & LOUIS XIV" so I read this book. When I was done with this book, I was able to finish the book about LOUIS XIV.

I also liked the Reader's Guide in the back of book. It was nice to see how the author came to write the book and what had inspired her.

It's well presented and you can learn a lot about a certain way of life. It's theme of "the other woman," is very applicable today.

Two thumbs. Good use of illustrations to give the reader a feel of the royal mistresses. I especially liked Nell Gywn, who was Charles II, down to Earth lover, and Mde. Maintenon, who was the governess of the Louis XIV's children and that's how he fell in love with her. The reader's guide is nice little perk. The length of the book is good, but since I was so into the topic, I wish it was just a little longer.
