This book is the first in what has become a wonderful series for children and teenagers. Alanna is a young girl living in the fantasy realm of Tortall. Ever since she was young, she has dreamed of becoming a female knight. Unfortunately, women are not allowed to become fighters in her world, and the prospect of becoming a proper lady is not one that appeals to her.

Her twin brother, Thom, agrees to switch places with her, and Alanna takes his place as a knight in training at the palace of King Roald. She must disguise herself as a boy and prove to all others that she deserves to fight alongside the finest knights of the realm of Tortall.

Young adults and middle school students who love fantasy. The book is also more geared toward female readers. I think that as long as you like reading books in the fantasy genre, anyone of any age will enjoy this book!

The theme of this book. I think Alanna disguising herself to go and follow her dream, and prove to people that she was just as good as any boy, is incredibly inspirational.

I really wanted to become a female knight! And it is inspiring me to take self-defense classes.

I believe that the author of this book got better as each subsequent book of hers was published! Her most current series is her best work.
