This novel is about the most beautiful queen of ancient Egypt and her lesser-known sister, Mutnodjmet. It centers around the times they lived in, the so-called Amarna era. This was the only time in ancient Egypt's history that they worshipped a single god, the Aten. What followed was plague, war, death, and chaos as the world Nefertiti and her husband Akhenaten strived so hard to build began to rapidly fall apart and take everyone associated with it.

Anyone who likes a good historical page-turner. Yeah, it starts out slow, but overall it makes the time spent reading it worth it.

The contrast between Nefertiti and Mutnodjmet's characters. Mutnodjmet was obviously the smarter and more considerate of the two. Nefertiti was more like Marie Antionette of France.

There were a few inaccuracies, some so blatantly obvious I laughed out loud at the audacity. There were no coconuts in ancient Egypt, nor orange blossoms, or chickens.

Read its sequel. There has got to be a sequel. Michelle Moran leaves off at the beginning of Tut's reign. It just can't end there!

Sad. So much from this era was lost due to the greed and stupidity of the people of that time.

This is Michelle Moran's first novel to be published in the United States.

It isn't the worst novel on the Amarnan era I have ever read, but it's not the best. That would go to Pauline Gedge's masterpeice, "The Twelth Transforming".

Well, I don't agree on the whole Nefertiti-ruled-as-a-pharaoh theory. Also, Mutnodjmet had two very prominant dwarf servants in real life that are not mentioned in this novel. Where were they?

Overall, the writer's style is very like that of Lynda S. Robinson. It could almost be read as a suppliment to her mystery series on Lord Meren.
