It is the 2nd part of The Empire Trilogy, after Daughter of the Empire. Lady Mara has defeated Lord Jingu of the Minnwabi in the Game of the Council and revenged her father's murder, but now faces a more dangerous enemy. The Minnwabi's have another leader now, and to ensure the survival of her house, Mara must avoid the treachery and intrigue that soaks every level of Tsurani politics. she must play the Game of the Council even better than before. But in the midst of this already titanic struggle, she must also deal with her growing doubt of her own world, urged on by her love for a barbarian slave from a different world with different cultures.

Anyone who enjoys fantasy, mixing magic with romance and intrigue. It helps, but is not absolutely necessary to have read the first book in the series.

The depth of the intrigue that personifies the Tsurani court and Mara's characterization through the emotional confusion that the opposing forces of the barbarian influences and Mara's unbringing.

Nothing really...I loved the book. Everything was understandable in context, although I suppose I dislike slavery on principle (but I liked it's presence in the book)

It is a good read, with a very good plot line and wonderful characterization. Each character is easy to identify with and helps to make the book an engaging read. The society is also well developed, with some links to feudal Japan, and easy to believe in. The novel mentions many 'taboo' subjects, and gives a unique perspective from someone who doesn't believe they are wrong.

I loved it, and I'm sure anyone else who reads it will enjoy it as well!
