Shukhov has been wrongfully imprisoned within a Soviet Gulag and this novel is the account of his days events as he struggles to maintain hope in less than desirable conditions. He is craft, cunning and dares to challenge authority doing what it takes to stay alive.

Understanding what life was like in the Soviet gulag. Understanding that hope can be generated even in the most challenging conditions, despair is not the answer.

When Shukhov hides the blade in his mitten, because he recognizes that it can be used later on to make a knife. He takes a chance that he will be caught by the Tartar. But still he does what is required to stay alive.

This reads continuously without a chapter break, just as Shukhov does not have a break from reveille to lights out.
