The first in an extensive series called the "Dresden Files," this is an occult fantasy. The main character, Harry Dresden, is an openly practicing wizard in modern day Chicago who makes his living as a private investigator. A series of bizarre deaths alert Harry to the practice of dark magic in the area which only he is capable of stopping.

Harry Potter fans looking for something slightly more adult. Also, anyone who is interested in occult fiction.

The depth of description written into the Dresden character. Not only does his wizardry go far beyond abracadabra's, but the description of his investigation practice is well crafted as well.

It is very realistic as far as occult fantasy goes. The Chicago atmosphere he works in is so detailed it pulls readers in as much anything else.

My favorite characters in this book other than Harry himself are Bob and Murphy. When you meet them, you'll understand why.
