Summary of this Book...
Originally published in 1871, this is one of the most unique and compelling children's stories I have ever read. This is the story of a young boy, Diamond, who lived in modest circumstances. One night the North Wind pays him a visit to complain because his mother has stuffed up her window (a hole in his bedroom wall, that his mother covered with brown paper to keep the cold out). So begins his adventurous journey of travels and lessons with North Wind. The story itself is charming and vivid, but there is subtext beneath, much as in The Narnia series, by C.S. Lewis. In his metaphoric way, MacDonald teaches us his view of the life and death and "The North Country", or heaven. The boy Diamond is a Christ-like figure who is always pure of heart and loving to all around him.
This type of Book is good for...
All ages. A must read for lovers of children's classic literature.
I especially liked...
The storyline is very creative and the characters vivid. It is a story I enjoy reading again and again, for it transports me to another place. Although set in England, probably in the mid to late 1800s, the story is not at all dated. It has a poignant message.
The author of this Book...
Although MacDonald claimed not to write for children, he is well known as a classic children's author. And indeed, his stories are engaging and challenging even to adult readers. I would compare him to C.S. Lewis who wrote that he regarded MacDonald as his "master". Lewis also said he was, "the greatest genius of his kind."
I recommend this Book because...
It is truly one of the classics, but somwhat of an undiscovered gem. I firmly suspect that someday someone in Hollywood will choose this story as the next children's blockbuster on par with 'The Golden Compass', 'The Secret Garden' or 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'.
