Summary of this Book...
I guess just about everyone likes a mystery or a film noir. This book proves an overview of over 100 classics including well-known titles, plus some that deserve greater recognition, plus those that are better off remaining in obscurity. Many of these titles, both highly desirable as well as totally expendable, are now available on DVD, including the "Bulldog Drummond" series, John Wayne's "Island in the Sky", Bogart's "To Have and Have Not", Gary Cooper's "The Real Glory", Basil Rathbone's "Sherlock Holmes Faces Death", Robert Mitchum's "Angel Face" and William Powell's "After the Thin Man".
This type of Book is good for...
everyone who loves classic Hollywood.
I especially liked... | ||
the detailed coverage given to each movie, including extensive cast and camera credits, release information, background notes, etc. I also enjoyed the articles on directors Otto Preminger and Robert Siodmak.
I didn't like... | ||
all the attention given to series like "Jungle Jim" and the "Bomba" movies and other Saturday matinee offerings like serials. Admittedly, "Jungle Girl" is one of my favorites, but "Chick Carter, Detective", "King of the Rocket Men", "The Clutching Hand", etc. are strictly from hunger.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
buy some of these movies on DVD.
This Book made me feel...
glad that I had seen and remembered many of these pictures.
The author of this Book...
knows his stuff. | ||
Further Comments... | ||
Reviewer, C.K. Brown of New York City, writes: "Once again, John Howard Reid and his fellow critics analyze films from the "Golden Age of Hollywood" and Britain. An awesome task! The films have to be grouped under certain criteria. For example, BOMBA THE JUNGLE BOY is included in this book because that film could well fit fit the criteria of mystery and suspense. Some titles might even have you scratching your head because of their inclusion--yet Mr Reid and crew pull it off. Their reviews are nothing short of habit forming. I heartily recommend this book. Rating: Five stars out of five!
