Need a clear explanation regarding the use of apostrophes, perhaps further clarification with verb usage?

I was first introduced to this book in college, when I took my first English Composition class, and I included as part of the curriculum when I taught a class on business writing for my former employer. I was pleased to find it again as a recommended item in Stephen King's book on writing. It's been around for decades, serving as a tool to both teach and remind everyone the merits of proper grammar usage.

At less than 100 pages in length, it's simply written and easy to use as a reference guide, small enough to carry in either a purse or a pocket. Every writer and student alike should own a copy of this book.
