Summary of this DVD... | ||
This movie is in the martial arts fantasy, or wuxia. It takes place in imperial China, and features a woman whose swordsmanship skills are high.
I especially liked... | ||
the fact that all of the actors playing Chinese people were of Chinese descent themselves. In the past, it wasn't unusual for characters of Chinese descent to be played by Caucasians on the silver screen. The fact that all of the Chinese characters were played by actors of Chinese descent is a testament to changing cultural understanding.
I didn't like... | ||
the special effects in this movie. Many times, the characters fought each other up on the very tips of the trees to the point where the tips bent. They also jumped unnaturally far, to the point where it looked as if they were flying. Such special effects do look interesting to a culture such as the United States that is overall unfamiliar with Chinese martial arts. But I've studied Chinese martial arts since I was six years old--and got my black belt when I was eighteen. When people hear that someone has a black belt, it often puts an expectation on me that I shoudl be able to do certain things that are very far from the truth.
