Summary of this Book...
This is a fictionalized account in the first person, told from the point of view of Ernest Hemingway's first wife. She was with him as he struggled as a young writer in Paris in the 1920's. He divorced her for another woman and regretted it his whole life long. It is based strongly on Hemingway's memoir, A Moveable Feast and is quite accurate with regard to chronological events in their lives.
This type of Book is good for...
anyone who has read and loved A Moveable Feast. Some of it is what I imagine it must have been like for Hadley Richardson Hemingway.
I especially liked...
when he calls her at the end and he says, "Hello Tatie" and she says "Hello Tatie", knowing imediately who it is.
I didn't like...
the way Ernest is portrayed as a rat. I think he acknowledges a lot of shortcomings in A Moveable Feast, but I don't believe he ever would have humiliated Hadley to the extent that his character does in this book.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
read A Moveable Feast again and I will very soon. It is my all time favorite non-fiction type book.
This Book made me feel...
sad for Ernest, who is not here to defend himself. He owned up to a great deal of bad behavior, but I do not think that should wind up being license to portray him as someone who would have humiliated Hadley to this extent.
The author of this Book...
gets a lot more right than she does wrong.
I recommend this Book because...
it might lead to younger readers discovering Hemingway. A Moveable Feast is one of the best works of modern literature, in my opinion.
Further Comments...
This was hard to read because I truly admire Ernest Hemingway. I also admire Hadley Richardson Hemingway based on the way her portrayed her in A Moveable Feast. I think it is not quite fair or sporting to take people who have been dead for almost 50 years (like Ernest) and make him out to be much worse than he was. It is a good read, but it made me feel sad for Ernest.
