Back in the good ol' days, a father, going on a big cattle drive, leaves his family and ranch in the charge of his eldest son, Travis. Travis feels the heavy responsibility on his shoulders, so when he discovers a big, ugly yellow dog stealing the meat supply, he angrily drives it away. His anger is doubled when he later finds his brother, Little Arliss, in the drinking pond with the big, ugly yellow dog.

Arliss and the dog are inseparable. Travis' view is changed by an event that makes Yeller and Travis soon inseparable. Their friendship strengthens as they fight surviving together and keeping the farm in order.

Then something terrible happens and Travis is forced to make a choice that will tear his heart apart. Healing cannot and does not come easily.

It is a very well-written tale of a boy and his dog, deep emotions and vivid reality. The whole book is written with a master's touch.

You'll never be able to let go of it or forget it. From the moment you pick it up, you will be riveted and unable to put it down, as I was.
