A masterclass story of discovery and investigation. A perfectly geometrical starship is discovered out in the depths of outer space, near Jupiters orbit. A team of astronauts are dispatched to investigate it, led by a William Norton, the book's protagonist. In so many ways, at each stage of discovery, it inspires wonder, awe, terror and all other kinds of emotions in each of the crew members.

As time passes, the crew manage to further and further explore the vast space of the inside world of Rama. It keeps to this theme throughout, eventually working its way to the southern end and back again.

The climax of the story results in the emergency departure of the crew from Rama, and its own vanishing into the outer depths of space, having been merely a passer-by of the Solar System.
