This is the story of the wild city of San Francisco in the days before the cataclysmic earthquake of 1906.

Clark Gable the owner of a disreputable joint and Spencer Tracy plays his childhood best friend, a priest. Jeanette Macdonald is a singer in the club, who is really an opera singer slumming.

anyone who is interested in the pairings of Gable and Tracy early on in their careers.

Spencer Tracy as Father Tim. I also liked Clark Gable's performance as Blackie.

Jeanette Macdonald. Her acting isn't great and I am not a big fan of screechy opera.

if you want to see the early work of Clark Gable or Spencer Tracy, this is a good vehicle for them. The horrific scenes of the earthquake are suprisingly realistic for having been filmed in the 1930's.
