I wanted to see this because I love the play so much. I saw the play in the 1980's at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. What I saw was the Broadway Cast before they took the show to Broadway. It was about 1986 or 1987. The cast included Colm Wilkinson, who is also in the movie.

When you see Colm Wilkinson in his prime as Jean Valjean, there is only one Jean Valjean. So, I came to watch with that bias and an open mind about the rest of the cast.

Jean Valjean steals a loaf of bread and goes to prison for 19 years. Javert is his jailer and nemesis. He is released and steals silver from the priest, but the priest forgives him and gives him the silver. This turns his life around, but Javert never stops looking for him and then the French Revolution happens. Valjean takes and raises a poor orphan girl after her mother dies in his arms. He is a good man and becomes rich and the mayor of a town. He passes on the kindness that the priest showed to him throughout his live.

Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean. He brought me to tears. I will always love Colm Wilkinson the most, but Hugh Jackman won a lot of respect from me.

Anne Hathaway as Fontine. I know she won the Oscar, but I didn't find her convincing in a role that needs to be convincing. I am sorry, but I would not have given her the Oscar for this.

is really good. My problem is nothing will ever stack up to the Broadway Play so I came in with a bias here, but I did enjoy the movie, more than I thought I would

it is a great story, with great songs. See it live if you can. If you can't this is the next best thing. There is nothing like seeing this performed live. It will stay with you forever in your heart.
