Summary of this Book...
This novel takes place during the start of WW II. It involves two women in Massachusetts and one who is a radio reporter in England. One of the women, Iris, is the Postmistress of Franklin, Mass. She intervenes and keeps and reads a letter meant for Emma, the wife of a local doctor who has gone over to England. The third woman, Frankie, the reporter, knows what has happened to Emma's husband so she comes to the town. This is after she knows for sure what is going on in Europe and Germany. She sees that first hand. This is set before the U.S. enters the war and is a powerful novel.
This type of Book is good for...
anyone who enjoys reading a good story.
I especially liked... | ||
Frankie and how all of her assumptions about things were shattered by war and the monsters in charge in Germany.
I didn't like... | ||
the death at the end. I felt it was unnecessary to have that happened. It sort of ruined a great story for me - the ending felt very contrived.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
read The Help because the author of that book recommended The Postmistress.
This Book made me feel...
like all the assumptions we hold in life are sometimes shattered by monstrous people. I remember going to France as a young girl and riding a train and having the official come by and demand money from us in the early morning hours over and above our fares. We were young girls traveling alone so we forked it over rather than face being kicked off the train in the nighttime in a country where we did not speak the language. This is nothing compared to what happened because of those Nazis and their monstrous ways. But it taught me that other countries do not always play by the rules. Heck, it happens here too I think.
The author of this Book...
tells a compelling story about people trying to get out and how a false sense of security kept the U.S. out of the war when we really should have been in it once they started bombing Britain.
I recommend this Book because...
it was compelling reading. It was good - I usually have a rule that 25-50 pages in if I do not care, I give up. With this one, something kept me reading even though the first part was a little slow. It was worthwhile to read on.
