Elizabeth Tucker worked hard to become a successful criminal attorney while raising her six year old son on her own. She only contacts the boy's father when she needs to find a bone marrow match for her son's leukemia surgery. Elizabeth hasn't contacted Aiden, the boys father, since their brief encounter in college when he left her pregnant and alone while he made his way to becoming a major league pitcher. It isn't until they reconnect that the story turns to love, grief, and forgiveness.

Contemporary Romance Novel

This story has everything packed into one book. The main characters are strong,knew what they wanted, and went after it. They both found their individual successes but each had gaps in their emotional relationships. The conflicts escalate and there is never any lack of interest in finding out where the story will take you.

I probably have a lot of items I didn't like because I thought there was so much more potential if they had been worked out.
1) The first person POV switched each chapter between main characters Elizabeth and Aiden. It was confusing trying to keep track of who was speaking. Aiden also had an additional inner voice or conscience he called the 'ump' that would randomly speak throughout the book.
2) The first chapter was laden with excessive descriptive words that fluffed up the setting and made it hard to find yourself in the story.
3) There were too many sub-plots. I felt bounced around with pop-up scenes that were scattered everywhere within the book, along with characters that were only introduced by name and not identified by their relationship to the characters we knew.
4) The six-year old son was described as wise beyond his years but the sage advise he would share at the precise moment a main character needed to hear it was unbelievable for a child. Also, the paranormal element at the end was stretched way over-the-top.

There is a lot that is good about this book. I felt there needed to be some trimming down of extra sub-plots and characters to concentrate on making the main idea stronger. The POV needed to remain constant and not hop around from head to head. The author has talent and I would be curious to read more of her work.
