This is the story of a naive young man who is appointed to finish out the term of a deceased U.S. Senator. He goes to Washington and has to deal with the corruption and lies that stare him in the face while he tries to do something good for the country. His good idea flies in the face of a project set to enrich a whole bunch of crooks, including his colleagues.

There is even the charge of wanting the "starve the poor" that is hurled nonsensically at him as it is hurled at anyone who dares to suggest that government handouts need to be paid for or ceased. God Forbid.

This timeless classic was made in 1939. Some things never change.

Jean Arthur. This movie came out the same year as Gone With the Wind so it didn't really get the acclaim or attention it deserved. Shame on me for not seeing it until now. I got it for Christmas.

is good. I didn't recognize Claude Rains (one of my favorites) for a good long while. He makes a good villain with a conscience here and in Casablanca.

it is a timeless story for anyone who thinks we are going through something "different" at the current time. The more things change, the more they are the same.
