After being attacked in Spain, Gabriel allowed himself to be declared dead, and hid himself away on a farm for two years. He returned home to find that Polly Hunt, the cook he had been able to keep at arm's length while working as a land steward, has been hired to paint his brother and sister-in-laws portraits.

Concerned for her safety as he attempts to figure out who tried to kill him, Gabriel is unable to convince her to leave.

Now he must unravel the plot behind his life, while keeping his family safe and thwarting his sister-in-law's mother's unwelcome plan, while Polly attempts to keep the secrets of her past from coming out.

Escaping.

The author does a wonderful job of weaving tales and creating interesting, albeit troubled characters.
