Summary of this DVD... | ||
This movie is considered by a lot of critics to be the best film of all time. I do not agree with that assessment. It is the story of Charles Foster Kane, a publishing tycoon, who has just died. This is a look back at his life, an examination of what he did and why he did it. His last word was, "Rosebud" and the man investigating his life focuses on trying to find the meaning of the word. He interviews a lot of people who shaped Kane's life, but in the end he does not know what it means. The audience is let in on the secret in the last scene of the film. I saw this movie a long time ago and I did not love it. I re-watched it last week and I still did not get the big deal that has been made over it. Maybe I will watch it in 20 years and then I will get it. I like that Rosebud thing though. I will not give away what it means or refers to here.
This type of DVD is good for...
anyone who wants to watch a classic film from 1941. The only thing was I could not understand why it has been so revered. I see Peter Bogdanovich (who is overrated his own self) in a lot of the commentary so maybe at the height of his success he started yelling about how great this movie was.
I especially liked... | ||
Ruth Warrick of All My Children fame as Kane's first wife. She was beautiful when she was young.
I didn't like... | ||
any time when Orson Welles would dance. I did not remember that from the first watching of the film - perhaps I blocked it out. It is just plain weird.
This DVD made me feel...
like I remembered the Rosebud thing right, but not a lot about the rest of the film.
The cast of this DVD... | ||
does a pretty good job, but nothing spectacular.
I recommend this DVD because...
it is an example (to me) of an overrated film. It is like a modern genius (Bogdanovich) raves about a film and suddenly it's the film to end all films. I've seen a lot better film than this one.
