Summary of this DVD... | ||
A bunch of misfits go on a stagecoach through Indian Territory during the time Geronimo is on the warpath. They have soldier escorts and are supposed to have them all the way through, but things happen and they end up on their own. This is the western that changed westerns and modernized them. It made John Wayne a big movie star. The whole thing is terribly dated now, but some of the character actors in the film are memorable. I particularly enjoyed Andy Devine and Thomas Mitchell as the drunken doctor. John Carradine is good as the gambler, too.
This type of DVD is good for...
anyone who enjoys westerns, I guess as this is considered a ground breaking film.
The cast of this DVD... | ||
is really good. I can see why Thomas Mitchell won the Oscar for this instead of Gone With the Wind. This, combined with that role, gave him a great year as a supporting actor. Since this is regarded as such a great and successful film, Hollywood probably wanted to acknowledge it in some way.
Further Comments... | ||
There is no comparing this to some of the other films of 1939, but it is regarded as the best of the best of the westerns. It seems predictable and kind of silly now, but this is 2015 so it is a long time after the film was made. When I think of 1939, I will at least know what they mean when they talk of the greatness of Stagecoach. I don't agree, but I do agree that Thomas Mitchell gave a great performance here, just as he did as Scarlett's father in Gone With The Wind, same year.
