Ol' Bear knows what he wants and with a heap of hope and hitch of his brithes, Ol' Bear goes off in search of Ugly Pie. "Me-oh-my-oh-my! Do I smell Ugly Pie?" But when pumpkin, rhubarb, or honey pie is offered up, he's itchin' for Ugly Pie but he always leaves with a little something his friends send home with him. But wait a sec! Ol' Bear gets looking at the wrinkled raisins, the sour apples, and the bumpy, brown walnuts. Ingredients! And along with his molasses, Ol' Bear makes not just any pie... Ugly Pie, alas.

I loved the dialect. It seemed to fit perfectly, almost lazily along, like a lumbering bear in search of what he was hankerin' for.

Lisa Wheeler proves her talent once again. And once again, she pulls from her past. She may have baked a few pies in her day (and most of them ugly, so she says) but now she prefers tasting goodies from her friends' kitchen instead.

Illustrator Heather Solomon doesn't like to cook either, though she too, doesn't mind nibbling on a snack cooked up by a friend.

It has the perfect combination of prose and rhyme... or should I say... ingredients! It's a lovely story in so many ways and the illustrations are absolutely wonderful.
