This is a literary classic. In it the author, Stephen Crane describes the conflict of consider endured by a soldier in the Civil War. It describes how his decision to desert affects him for the rest of his life. While he does the right thing, he initially deserts under fire. This mistake haunts him forever.

Any reader teen and up.

I liked the way Crane seemed to get into his character's mind. He described the emotions very well.

I didn't like the dialogue. Crane wrote as he felt his characters would speak. This was effective in setting the scene but was difficult to read.

I wanted to know more about the Civil War.

I felt fortunate not to have fought in this terrible war.

It is not often read in high schools or college but is an American classic.

I don't recommend it if one cannot read well due to the dialogue.

I am glad I read this book. Stephen Crane is my new favorite author.
