Summary of this Book...
The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglas What happened to Jesus' robe? The Bible tells us the soldiers gambled for His clothing. I am intrigued by Douglas's fictional tale of what happened to the soldier who won the robe of Jesus. The main character in The Robe is a Roman centurion named Marcellus. Early in the story, Marcellus buys a Greek slave named Demetrius. We join the story for some background expository information as Marcellus visits with his sister on the patio. The story starts in Rome where we find Marcellus in hot water with a local official. Gaius is in a position of authority and uses his position to order Marcellus to assume command of a fort near Jerusalem at a critical time in Judeo/Christian history. The Bible tells us the soldiers who were at the crucifixion of Jesus gambled for his robe. Have you ever wondered who won it and what they did with it? There is no record so we don't know what became of it. Lloyd C. Douglas thought about it and from his contemplations came the story The Robe. The soldier who wins the robe has a life changing experience as a result. His slave's life begins to change the moment he sees Jesus. What affect does this robe and this man have in their lives. Their relationship is permanently altered. They are called on to talk about what happened. Marcellus travels to the palace and then back to Galilee to learn more. He brings the fruit off his quest for knowledge back to Rome and faces Gaius once again. Worth reading. I like some of the words from my original review better so I am adding them here before I delete that review: I have read The Robe many times. I still thrill at the sword pay when Marcellus assumes command of the fort. I think of Demetrius, new to slavehood, diving into the family's pool. The twins serving breakfast to Marcellus and his sister. His mother's attempt to be brave when her son is about to leave to go to a godforsaken place I cringe when Marcellus slaps Demetrius. I love Demetrius when he turns down his freedom out of love for his master and stands by his side as he faces his demons. I am pleased when Demetrius clobbers the rude centurion. I enjoy the times in the vineyard. I cry when Marcellus and Diana go to their death. I still cry, every time. This book is chockful with adventure. It has a scriptural backstory. It is fun to read and well-written. I have not only read the book many times, I have also watched the movie. The book is better! Some hidden words are here:
