Summary of this Book...
A group of men, all a bit in love with a woman, go with that woman to Spain for the bullfights in 1925. This is the Pamplona San Fermin Festival, where the running of the bulls takes place.

All the men want to sleep with the woman, Lady Brett Ashely and all but one of them do. She is that fast and promiscuous. This was based on the real life adventures that have now been documented in a book called, "Everybody Behaves Badly."

I reread this book after more than 40 years because I wanted to remember it as I read the book about the writing of this book.

Ernest Hemingway is someone whose life is more exciting than his fiction. That is truly saying something because his fiction is masterpiece, groundbreaking stuff.

This is his first successful novel, and is considered to be a literary classic.

Brett sleeps with everyone except Jake the narrator. She even (it could be argued) ruins the noble bullfighter by corrupting him into her bed. Of course she doesn't ruin his entire life by marrying him, and she admires herself endlessly for being so noble as to send Pedro Romero on his way.
This Book made me feel...
like this is a motley group of characters and I can see why Ernest was so annoyed with them that he portrayed them as a bunch of whoring drunkards.
The author of this Book...
is my favorite author of all time. His book, A Moveable Feast is my absolute favorite book and I've read it many times over.
I recommend this Book because...
if you are going to read Ernest Hemingway and understand him as a person, I think you have to read this book and A Moveable Feast. That is what you need to do in order to have a minimum understanding of the writer and the man.
Further Comments...
All the characters in this book, except for the narrator seem to really be a lost generation. At least the narrator retains his faith and a lot of his dignity by not sleeping with Brett Ashley. Of course, he can't do it, that's the thing. I can see why the book devastated the real people who were depicted with fictitious names.
