Summary of this DVD... | ||
This movie is one of my favorites ever. I was used to watching it on an old VHS tape, but this year, for Valentine's Day I got myself the Blu Ray on Amazon for about 8$. What a joy! The story is of Holly Go-lightly, a New York Socialite who is not what she seems at first. She loves to go and window shop at Tiffany's, gazing in the window and eating her breakfast roll. She asserts that nothing bad can ever happen at Tiffany's. I think she's right - not at the one in this movie. George Peppard plays her friend, an erstwhile writer who is the call-boy for a wealthy married lady. His character is called Fred, but his name is Paul Varjak. Holly is played, to perfection, by Audrey Hepburn. There is a school of thought that she might be a prostitute, but in the film she always avoids the sex part of an evening out. She's constantly escaping out the window or through a powder room as she searches for love in the city. A lovely cat, named Cat rounds out the trio. Mickey Rooney plays a politically incorrect Japanese neighbor and Martin Balsam is an all-knowing agent and helping friend. Buddy Ebsen has a brief, but memorable part, as Holly's former husband (it was annulled) who knows about her past life in Texas when she was Lula Mae Golightly. Fred/Paul falls in love with her and who wouldn't? She sits on a window sill and sings Moon River for goodness sakes! I love love love this film. The music by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer makes it unforgettable. John McGiver has a small role as a helpful sales clerk at Tiffany's the ultimate in romantic dates besides the New York Public Library. The movie ends with Cat in the rain. Hollywood should hang its head in shame that this didn't win Best Picture, Actor and Actress. Maybe there is a more iconic, memorable film somewhere, but I sure don't know what it is. Five stars, all the way, Fred Baby. Love it so much! | ||
