I figured I’d read the book before seeing the film, because the trailer for the film looks brilliant, and being a massive reader, I assumed the book would be even better. Oh boy, how wrong I was. I’d read some critics reviews of the film, mostly bad, talking about how they shoved multiple books worth of content into one film. I’m not surprised if all the books are as boring as the first one.

Spoiler Alert: The Gunslinger walks a lot.

That’s basically all he did in this book. Walked across a desert, met some people along the way that gave him an excuse to talk about his past. His past is pretty boring, so why we needed to hear about it, I don’t know. He’s walking across the desert to catch someone known as “The Man in Black”. Why he’s doing this isn’t clear throughout most of the book, and considering he’s the “gunslinger” he doesn’t use his guns all that much. It’s just boring.

The writing isn’t what I’d call magnificent. This is the first Stephen King book I’ve read, and if they all follow this trend, then I’m really confused about his popularity. The first chapter was an info-dump of epic proportions.

Last, and least, the main character. I don’t know about you, but I like main characters to be likeable. There was nothing about this guy that seemed worth the four hours of my time reading it.

I read that the next few books get better, but I’m not sure I want to risk it.
