Summary of this Book...
Wow. This book is beautifully written and absolutely heartbreaking. At the same time, it is uplifting and hopeful. It shows both the evils that humans inflict upon one another and the levels to which they go to help on another. It is a book of many conflictions. But, mostly, it is a story about a wonderful man who showed huge compassion in everything he did. It is also a wonderful love story. When reading this, I couldn't help but be affected by some of the horrific descriptions of the concentration camp and the treatment of the prisoners. It's sickening to read the inhumanity present. It's also heartening to see how people pulled together. This book is going to stay with me for a long time. It's impossible to read these horrors and not have them imprinted on your brain.
This type of Book is good for...
Everyone. Everyone should read this. There is so much we can learn from it, particularly in today's political climate.
I especially liked... | ||
The human spirit. The way Lale never gave up. He knew he would make it out alive and marry his beloved Gita one day. The love story is breathtaking. I like the photos and building plans at the end of the novel. These help us to fill in any blanks we may have.
This Book made me feel...
Angry. Sick. But, also happy and heartened. My emotions through the whole book have been all over the place. At times, I cried. At times, I laughed. Mostly, though, I feel so sad that this happened. It still happens in some places today, and I can't even imagine how horrendous their lives must be.
I recommend this Book because...
It's both a history lesson and a love story. It is the true story of Lale and Gita and al the people around them. It might just make us think about the way we treat others a little more.
