I discovered Peter Robinson at the Eden Mills Writer's Festival last fall. Although he was reading from a new book in his Inspector Banks series, I bought this first one and was quite pleased with my choice. I also got the book signed by the author. This book gives a great introduction to the Banks character and his wife (as she is involved in the cases that Banks is working on) It has a been made into a BBC TV series - DCI Banks. It has the flavour of another DCI BBC series with DCI Barnaby. from the Midsomer Murders. I have not seen the Banks TV series, but I enjoyed the book and its story. Several cases were woven together and the pace was done very well... getting faster as the conclusions were coming together. I get the impression DCI Banks is a darker series than Midsomer Murders, even though the one murder in the book happened later in the story. The investigations in this one contain a Peeping Tom, who may or may not escalate to violence and burglaries that may be being done by a couple of teenagers. Both crimes do escalate. The murder that is committed may be related to one of the other cases... but may not be. I don't want to give too much away. The area is Eastvale which is in around the Yorkshire Dales in England. It is no James Heriot, but the area is similar, if not more contemporary than the veterinarian of those Heriot stories.

Anyone who likes mysteries, particularly British mysteries.

I liked his pacing and the ending was satisfying.

I want to read others in this series. This is only the first of many.

Divides his time between Toronto, Canada and Yorkshire England. I got to here him read at the Eden Mills Writer's Festival and got my copy of this book signed.

Robinson has a way of crafting characters and does an excellent job of pacing the mystery as it unfolds.
