This book came to me in a rather odd way. A few years ago I was in Barnes and Noble and the woman in front of me in line starting talking to me about this book she was buying. She said someone had recommended it to her as the best book they'd ever read and she wanted to know if I had read it.

I hadn't heard of it, but this made me want to buy it and see so I went back and found it and bought it. However, I put it aside and didn't read it for a couple of years, until just the right time.

The book is brilliant. A lost man finds an abandoned child and makes the noble choices one would hope for, but rarely sees in a human being. I won't criticize it at all. It's original, clever and it held my interest all the way through. Is it my favorite book ever? No. Maybe it didn't come first before A Prayer for Owen Meany and that is why I would relegate it to a lower position.

The parts of the story where people reach out to help others (when they don't have to and pressure is put on not to) always appeals to me.

I love this quote:

"Sometimes books don't find us until the right time."

There is a lot in this book to hearten and give confidence to fledgling writers. I enjoyed it a lot and will not criticize - it's a readers book for readers who love books, not for those who tear them apart.

A nod to Mr. Hemingway always appeals to me. Not many writers have it in them to acknowledge another writer's talents, but this one does again and again.

Brilliant. I won't forget it.
