Eliot is the reason my cats have always had three names - one of which I do not know (of course) - "The Naming Of Cats" has been a favourite since I was quite young. I was fortunate to come to his work though Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, as many of his works are difficult until you contextualize them with additional resources, but the whimsy of Cats is one that is accessible and never fails to delight. Truth be told, I am more a fan of his poetry than his plays. Elliot is a master of allusion, and once upon a time, I would have struggled with it - but thankfully the internet helps with the more difficult parts. Even with the primers and helpful dissections, there is always something new to chew on when you revisit each piece. Definitely among the highest calibre of poets, "The Waste Land" and "Practical Cats" are worth the price of admission all by themselves, and provide the serious, the whimsical, the cerebral and the accessible for any reader. | ||
