Summary of this Book...
Be friends with your kid. Don't punish them unnecessarily. Corporal punishment is bad. Get your kid's buy-in on their discipline program so they understand they have agency. And other such parenting tips and advice.
This type of Book is good for...
Parents who truly have no idea how to have a positive and affirming relationship with their children.
I especially liked... | ||
Some of the general points about how to view the relationship between children and their parents, and the various responsibilities parents have with respect to their kids.
I didn't like... | ||
How generic the advice was, and how it regularly prioritized making the children feel good about the discipline process which, to me, kind of feels like a secondary objective of disciplining them?
This Book made me feel...
Like I'm already doing a lot of the stuff this book says I should be doing.
I recommend this Book because...
If you have literally no idea how to have a positive relationship with your kids, or truly don't know the first thing about discipline that isn't punitive, this book will be very helpful.
I don't recommend this Book because...
If you already have a decent relationship with your kids and are basically doing a decent job of disciplining them, you're not going to learn a whole lot of new info from this book.
Further Comments... | ||
Like so many parenting books I've read, this one has both good and bad advice. Is it important to treat your kids with respect and try to see things from their perspective? Of course. Should you be a friend to your kid as well as an authority figure? Yes. Should you always prioritize being a friend and seeing things from their perspective and getting their buy-in on things above all else? Not necessarily. Overall, this book felt like it was more for parents who just truly have no idea how to treat their kids like human beings, and less for parents who already have a decent relationship with their kids and are just looking for ways to improve their disciplinary methods.
